As the construction industry embraces digital transformation, the organization identified the need to modernize its operations. To improve efficiency and maintain a competitive advantage, they initiated a strategic move from their legacy on-premises ERP system to a more agile and scalable cloud-based ERP platform.

Business Objectives

In Phase 2 of the transformation initiative, our objective was to seamlessly migrate the client’s mission-critical construction data from their on-premises SAP HANA system to a modern SQL Server–based cloud environment. This migration was a key step in helping the client scale operations, enhance data accessibility, and unlock advanced analytics capabilities to drive smarter, faster decision-making.

We set out to deliver a migration process that ensured data integrity, consistency, and zero downtime for day-to-day operations. Beyond simply transferring data, our goal was to establish a robust cloud foundation that would support future ERP modernization and empower the client to manage complex project, financial, and customer data within a unified, cloud-enabled ecosystem.

Solution

To enable a smooth transition from SAP HANA to SQL Server, the migration was designed as a structured, end-to-end process focused on precision, traceability, and data integrity.

Using Azure Data Factory (ADF), data was extracted from SAP HANA and securely stored in Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) in CSV format. From there, it was transferred to SQL Server staging tables, preserving all records in their original form for controlled processing.

Once staged, predefined business mapping tables, developed jointly with the SAP and TC1 business teams, were applied to align the data with the required TC1 format. This ensured that every field and value was accurately translated while maintaining relational integrity. Configuration tables supported the orchestration of extraction, transformation, and dashboard mapping in the target environment.

After transformation, the data was loaded into the final TC1-aligned tables. For specific datasets, ERP import templates were used to automate uploads, accelerating migration while maintaining consistency.

All activities were logged within AuditDB, creating a full audit trail for monitoring and validation. Power BI dashboards then visualized these results, allowing real-time verification and ensuring that every migrated data point matched expectations.

The migration delivered measurable improvements across security, performance, and operational efficiency.

A strong security framework, compliant with industry standards such as GDPR, safeguarded sensitive information throughout the migration process. Data remained protected at every stage, ensuring complete peace of mind for the client.

Through the use of Azure Data Factory and a clearly defined mapping strategy, all construction-related data was migrated from the on-premises ERP to the new cloud-based environment with full integrity and accuracy.

The transition to a cloud-based ERP system enabled greater scalability, accessibility, and the ability to leverage advanced analytics. This modernization now supports more efficient project tracking, financial management, and business decision-making.

Integrated validation processes and auditing mechanisms, supported by Power BI dashboards—provided real-time visibility into data accuracy and performance. Any discrepancies were quickly identified and resolved, ensuring confidence in the final output.

Careful planning and phased execution minimized downtime and disruption. Following go-live, a 45-day hyper-care period ensured ongoing stability, allowing for additional data loads, issue resolution, and fine-tuning based on operational feedback.
